China’s Western Mining Co. has secured a mining license for the Tawenchahan iron polymetallic mine in Golmud City, Qinghai province, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Qinghai Ganxin Mining Development Co.

The license, issued by the Qinghai Provincial Department of Natural Resources, covers the extraction of iron, copper, gold, molybdenum, zinc, lead and silver. It is valid from August 31, 2026 to August 30, 2043, marking the project’s transition from exploration to mining.

The mining area contains approximately 36.95 million mt of industrial iron ore resources with an average grade of 30% mFe. It also holds associated resources including 4 mt of gold, 10,950 mt of copper, 29,092 mt of zinc, 1,201 mt of lead, 407 mt of molybdenum and 770 kg of silver.

Western Mining said the license will strengthen its iron resource security and reinforce its position in the iron ore sector. However, additional approvals are still required before the mine can enter production.
