SteelAsia Temporarily Suspends Calaca Scrap Recycling Plant Amid Zinc Dust Dispute

SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation, the Philippines’ largest steel producer, has temporarily suspended operations at its Calaca scrap-recycling facility following an order from the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) to assume custody of 23 containers of zinc dust linked to Zannwann International Trading Corp.

SteelAsia denied any involvement, stating that it does not produce or export zinc dust, lacks any capability to handle radioactive waste, and that all its scrap inputs undergo radiation testing under PNRI supervision.

The company described the order as “illegal, baseless, and unscientific,” warning that it could disrupt industrial operations and employment within the Calaca zone.

SteelAsia cautioned that enforcing the PNRI directive could halt its leading scrap-recycling operations, trigger an investment freeze, and impact the Philippine construction sector due to potential raw material shortages.
