China has completed its first million-mt near-zero-carbon steel production line, marking a major milestone in the country’s low-carbon industrial transition.

The project, located in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, was announced on December 23 by the Department of Ecology and Environment of Guangdong Province. The production line is owned by Baowu Steel.

The facility adopts an advanced hydrogen-based metallurgical electric smelting process, replacing traditional coke with hydrogen as the primary reducing agent, while the entire electric furnace operation is powered by renewable electricity.

Key installations include a 220-mt high-efficiency green electric furnace, refining facilities, and a 2,150 mm single-strand slab continuous casting line.

According to official statements, the near-zero-carbon process can reduce carbon emissions by 50–80% compared with conventional steelmaking, representing a significant breakthrough for China’s steel industry.
